Nepenthes Rajah
Ref No:
Description:

Native To:
Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.
Species Environment:
Highland.
Ideal UK Environment:
Heated Greenhouse
Feeding:
grubs, caterpillars, flies, slugs, snails etc...

This is said to be one of the largest carnivores plants in the world with pitchers that can grow to the size of a small football.  However this plant is very slow growing and needs a lot of careful looking after.

It is native to Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Originally, it was restricted to this area but because of progress in Plant Tissue Culture (micro-propagation) it is now possible to grow these plants away from their native lands.

Nepenthes Rajah is a very much sought after species due to its rarity, the shape of its pitchers and the size of which they grow; the pitchers are said to grow up to 18 by 35 cm although this usually takes many years. It is one of the more slow growing pitcher plants and was once very difficult to propagate.

This plant is also a climber and have been known to grow up to twenty feet high though it is very rare. Because of this, Nepenthes Rajah produces two types of pitchers; these being upper and lower pitchers.

  • The lower pitchers are more common and prefer to rest on the ground rather than hang from above. Their natural diet consists of insects, mostly ants, and certain species of arthropods; though if kept in a greenhouse you can feed them on just about anything i.e. grubs, caterpillars, flies, slugs, snails etc... In Nepenthes Rajah's natural environment the pitchers have been known to trap lizards, birds and even small mammals.
  • The upper pitchers will be produced by older plants, are a lot smaller than their lower counterparts and will attract airborne types of prey.

Nepenthes Rajah grows best in moist compost but does not like to sit in water as the roots of the plant will rot. A hanging basket or a pot sat on staging and watered using a drip systems has worked best for our specimens.
